Kerala Tourist Information

Calm beaches, uniform climate, tranquil stretches of backwaters, delightful hill stations and adventurous wildlife are the key attractions of Kerala. A unique benefit of traveling in Kerala is that most of the destinations in the region are just 2-4 hours drive from each other. Plentiful rainfall means that you can find rich greenery all around the year. A vacation to Kerala is a great opportunity to relax and rejuvenate. You can get yourself an Ayurvedic oil massage, lazy around in a cozy houseboat watching palm trees pass by, or get into some fun and frolic on Kovalam or Varkala beaches.

In comparison to other parts of India, Kerala is safe, unpushy and friendly. The state has high standards of living compared to other Indian states. Therefore, you can relax without being followed around by taxi drivers, guides and touts. But you might have to put up with beggars who migrate from poorer neighboring states.

How To Reach

Kerala has three airports namely Kochi, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram that offer both domestic and international flights. These airports have several carriers operating international flights across the globe. Besides international carriers, Air India, Kingfisher and Jet Airways offer international connections from Kochi. Domestic destinations that are linked by direct flights from these airports include Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, Agatti, Hyderabad, Goa and Mangalore.

There is a good network of inter-state private and government buses operating between Kerala and neighboring states. Generally the journey is covered in the night so that you can escape the heat of the day. The most commonly operating inter-state bus is Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC-Karnataka) with daily bus from many major cities of Kerala to Mysore, Bangalore and Mangalore. Tamil Nadu State Bus (such as SETC) also operates on a daily basis from Kerala.

Indian Railways manages a number of trains to, from and within Kerala. Trains arriving in Kerala start from neighboring regions like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Also, long-haul direct train services from metropolitan cities like Delhi and Mumbai are available too.

A major cruise port, Kochi has a number of international cruise terminal under its belt (under construction). A regular luxury Cruise between Kochi, Male and Colombo is in operation now. Some private players have included regular cruises in their packages (from Goa and Mumbai to Kochi). Also private yachts and other sea faring boats regularly halt at Kochi.
